What do Clients Say?

Barbara and Tony are the best realtors we’ve ever worked with. They’re responsive, knowledgeable, hard-working, and they truly had our best interests at heart. There were plenty of times when they could have kept quiet about marketability or price issues with some properties we saw to get a quick commission but didn’t. They stayed with us for months until we found the right place, and we will definitely use them again.

David Roush, Tryon, NC, Buyer 2017

Unbelievably nice, honest and competent realtors! On top of the purchase the whole time, didn’t let anything slip through the cracks. No high pressure either. I highly recommend Barbara and Tony. When/if I ever buy or sell real estate in the area again, they will undoubtedly be my GoTo realtors!

Beth Jones, Columbus, NC, Buyer 2017

I cannot recommend Tony and Barbara enough! They sat down with us and really took time to get to know our family and understand what we were looking for in a house. They were kind, patient, and thorough, explained every step of the buying process, and communicated quickly and clearly throughout.

Taylor Jackson, Columbus, NC, Buyer 2017

Barbara was both professional, friendly, extremely knowledgeable and capable when it came to all aspects of selling our home. I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone wanting to buy or sell a property. She and her husband Tony were the kind of people we were immediately comfortable with and we were completely happy and satisfied with every hoop and loop that needed to be got through in the process of selling our home. They really know their stuff and that took a lot of the burden off our shoulders. We are SO thankful that we chose them as our realtors!

Amy Wellard, Columbus, NC, Seller 2017

I am thrilled to write in praise of Barbara Claussen. In all of my years of buying, selling and moving, I have never experienced a realtor like her. I was quite jaded about realtors and didn’t even realize that realtors could be this wonderful. Adding Tony to the mix only strengthened the possibility of a successful scenario. What a fantastic team! Without a doubt, Barbara exceeded my expectations and I felt like I had won the lottery having her on my side. She is honest, knowledgeable, professional and she always made me feel as if I was her top priority. This sale was by no means a huge financial windfall for her nor was it an easy one, but she treated it as if was top sale of her career. I felt confident knowing I had Barbara representing me in all of the negotiations. Barbara brought a personal touch that I have never seen from other agents. She steered me through some major pitfalls and saved me considerable money. I am still amazed at the service I received. I highly recommend her and Tony.

About Barbara

Barbara Claussen was born and raised in Kampen, Isle of Sylt, Germany. At the adventurous age of 18 she moved to, what was at that time, West Berlin where she achieved a degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Marketing. She was recruited by a real estate company known as Engel & Voelkers and for 6 years worked with her colleagues in Berlin helping to meld the company into what is now the largest privately held real estate company in Europe with offices in 38 countries around the world. She worked there as the first female Commercial Realtor and won an award for the highest earnings in this field in her second year. It was Engel & Voelkers affiliation with Sotheby’s International Realty that brought Barbara to Canada in 1996 on an exchange program with the Nova Scotia affiliate of Sotheby’s International Realty, AA Walters Limited. She came to learn better English, which she did, and fell in love with Nova Scotia and Tony Walters, the founder of the firm with whom she came to work for. Together Tony and Barbara lead for 18 years as co-owners Claussen Walters & Associates and set the standard of excellence within the Province’s real estate industry.

Outside of the office Barbara renovated numerous historic houses and in 2001 won the Historic Restoration Award presented by the Town of Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

But Barbara’s real passion in life, one that goes back as far as she can remember, lies within the animal kingdom. Home in Nova Scotia was Whinny Hill Farm where Barbara established the Donkey Sanctuary of Nova Scotia and Hoofbeat, a horse rescue endeavor. Together the two organizations have rescued and found homes for more than 90 horses and donkeys.

In the fall of 2014 Barbara and her husband, Tony, packed up the farm in Nova Scotia and moved, together with 6 donkeys, 5 horses, 5 dogs and 4 cats, to the sunny foothills of North Carolina where Barbara continues to pursue her passions of animal rescue and loving horses and donkeys. She is riding CETA trails in her spare time and renovating, again, their home close to Columbus. Being close to Tony’s family means a lot to her. Her 5 stepchildren and 5 grandkids love to come for a visit, because of the beautiful landscape and the much warmer weather than up north.
